How to Mount and Tension an Open-Sided Golf Impact Screen

A practical guide to level attachment, controlled slack, bottom restraint, rebound space, and safe testing in a garage golf simulator.

An open-sided garage can be a practical location for a golf simulator, but the lack of permanent side walls changes how the golf impact screen should be mounted and tensioned.

The goal is not maximum tension. A good installation combines balanced tension, secure attachment, controlled deflection, and a clear rebound area so the screen stays reasonably flat while still absorbing golf-ball impacts.

Start with the manufacturer's installation requirements.
Screen fabrics, edge construction, grommets, attachment systems, and acceptable stretch vary, so do not assume one mounting method works for every screen.

1. Check the Screen Mounting Requirements

Before drilling, anchoring, or applying tension, confirm how the screen is designed to be supported.

  • Approved attachment points around the screen.
  • Grommet or loop spacing and recommended bungees, cords, or straps.
  • Required clearance behind the impact screen.
  • Bottom-edge requirements for restraint, tension, or free movement.
  • Screen stretch or attachment-force limits.

This is especially important in an open-sided garage where the mounting structure may differ from a complete golf simulator enclosure. Do not automatically stretch the screen tightly on all four sides.

2. Start With a Level Top Edge

The top attachment establishes the screen's geometry. If one side starts higher, diagonal folds can develop and become difficult to correct later.

  1. Confirm the frame, track, cable, or mounting rail is secure.
  2. Mark the center of the screen and mounting structure.
  3. Hang the screen from the center outward where possible.
  4. Check that the top edge is level across the full width.
  5. Then adjust the remaining attachment points gradually.

Avoid the “tight corner” fix. Pulling one corner harder can remove one wrinkle while creating diagonal stress elsewhere.

3. Distribute Tension Evenly

Once the top is level, make small adjustments across the width instead of fully tightening one attachment point at a time.

If the screen uses grommets and elastic attachments, the connections should share the load as a system.

  • A level top edge
  • Reasonably straight vertical edges
  • No large diagonal folds
  • No attachment point pulling the fabric sharply out of shape
  • Enough movement for impact deflection

Wide garage screens benefit from gradual adjustment because even a small alignment error can become obvious across the full width.

4. Balance Wrinkle Control and Screen Deflection

An impact screen must provide a reasonably smooth projection surface while absorbing repeated golf-ball impacts.

If it is too loose, you may see large folds, excessive movement, an uneven projected image, or too much travel into the space behind the screen. If it is too tight, the fabric may have less freedom to deflect.

The better target is controlled slack: remove major folds without stretching the screen into a rigid surface.

Think “flat enough to project, loose enough to absorb.”

Wrinkle control and impact absorption must be tuned together.

5. Control the Bottom Edge

The bottom edge can strongly affect how the complete screen behaves. Follow the manufacturer's specified restraint method, whether it uses elastic attachments, lower mounting points, a designed pocket, or a partially free edge.

The bottom should help control screen movement without placing exposed hard objects in the impact area. Cables, brackets, anchors, and rails should be positioned or protected so low shots cannot strike them and rebound unpredictably.

Do not hang improvised heavy objects from the screen just to remove wrinkles. Extra weight changes loads on the fabric, seams, hardware, and supporting structure.

6. Keep the Rebound Zone Clear

Open sides provide less containment than a complete enclosure. Before hitting balls, inspect the entire hitting and rebound area.

  • Move vehicles outside the swing and rebound area.
  • Remove loose tools, boxes, and portable equipment.
  • Protect or relocate exposed shelves and hard edges.
  • Keep cables and loose objects off the floor.
  • Move fragile items away from the open sides.

Maintain the screen manufacturer's required clearance behind the fabric so it can deflect without contacting a wall, garage door, shelving system, or other rigid structure.

7. Use Appropriate Structural Anchors

An impact screen creates repeated dynamic loads as it moves during practice. Permanent mounting points must therefore match the actual wall, ceiling, or structural member.

Garage structures may include timber or metal framing, concrete, masonry, structural beams, garage-door framing, or non-structural finishes. A fastener suitable for one substrate may not work for another.

If framing is hidden, the span is unusually wide, or suitable mounting points are uncertain, have the attachment plan reviewed before installing permanent hardware.

8. Test the Screen Progressively

Do not move directly from installation to full-speed driver shots.

  1. Inspect the mounting system. Confirm the screen is centered and all attachments are engaged.
  2. Clear the rebound area. Keep other people outside the hitting zone.
  3. Start with controlled shots. Observe screen movement and ball return.
  4. Watch the edges. Ensure hardware is not becoming exposed.
  5. Make small adjustments. Change one tension variable at a time.
  6. Increase speed gradually only when the system behaves consistently.

Stop if an anchor moves, the screen contacts another object, the ball rebounds unexpectedly, or the fabric pulls sharply around an attachment point.

9. Inspect After Initial Use

The first practice sessions may reveal movement that was not visible while the screen was unloaded.

  • Seams and grommets for pulling or damage
  • Bungees, cords, and cables for unusual wear
  • Anchors and brackets for movement
  • Bottom restraints for shifting
  • Screen alignment for new folds or uneven tension
  • Nearby structures for signs of screen contact

Good tension is not maximum tension.
