The goal is not to maximize frame height or minimize mat thickness separately. A good installation balances adequate swing clearance, centered impact zone, accessible screen edges, and correct projector alignment so the system works reliably for your tallest player and longest club.
Measure your space with the mat in position before finalizing frame height. Ceiling clearance and projector distance depend on the floor level where the golfer actually stands, not the structural floor.
1. Calculate Required Ceiling Clearance
Ceiling clearance must accommodate the tallest player's height, plus backswing club extension, plus a safety margin. This measurement starts from the mat surface, not the structural floor.

Required clearance = Player height + 24-30 inches + Mat thickness
For example, a 6-foot (72-inch) player using a driver with 27 inches of backswing extension on a 1.5-inch mat requires:
72 + 27 + 1.5 = 100.5 inches (8 feet 4.5 inches) minimum ceiling height
If your structural ceiling is 9 feet (108 inches) and the mat adds 1.5 inches, the usable clearance is 106.5 inches, leaving 6 inches of margin.
Do not assume "10 feet of ceiling is enough." Actual usable clearance depends on mat height, player height, swing arc, and club length. Measure before building.
2. Position the Impact Zone Relative to Mat Height
The screen's primary impact zone should be centered at approximately 48-60 inches above the mat surface for drivers and fairway woods. This zone receives the highest frequency and force of impacts.
If the mat sits directly on the floor, a standard 9-foot (108-inch) screen with the bottom edge at floor level places the center at 54 inches—appropriate for most players. If the mat sits on a 2-inch platform, the effective impact zone shifts upward, and the screen bottom edge should also rise by 2 inches to maintain proper alignment.

- Measure from the mat surface to the anticipated ball contact height (typically 0-3 inches above mat for woods).
- Add 45-55 inches to locate the center of the impact zone.
- Confirm the screen frame supports this height without placing structural brackets in high-impact areas.

3. Account for Mat Thickness in Projector Placement
Short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors have narrow vertical offset tolerances, meaning small changes in mat height can shift the image off the screen or create keystone distortion.
If the mat elevates the golfer by 2 inches, the projector must also rise by approximately 2 inches (or its tilt angle must be adjusted) to maintain the same image position on the screen. This adjustment affects:
- Projector mounting height: Ceiling-mounted projectors need precise vertical alignment with the screen center.
- Throw distance: Floor-mounted or shelf-mounted projectors may need horizontal position shifts to maintain focus and image size.

- Medium mats (1-1.5 inches): Balance comfort and space. Most common for home simulators.
- Thick mats (1.5-2.5 inches): Maximize impact absorption but require more ceiling clearance and careful projector alignment. Preferred for commercial installations or players with joint concerns.
If ceiling clearance is limited, prioritize a thinner mat and compensate with proper swing technique and joint-friendly shoes rather than forcing a thick mat into inadequate space.
5. Verify Screen Edge Accessibility
The screen bottom edge must be low enough to allow installation, tensioning, and future re-tensioning, but high enough to avoid foot contact or mat obstruction. A common error is positioning the screen bottom edge flush with the mat surface, which prevents proper tension adjustment and accumulates dirt transfer from shoes.
Recommended bottom-edge clearance is 1-3 inches above the mat surface. This gap allows tension adjustment, protects the screen from foot strikes during approach, and creates visual separation between the mat and image.
